因為反滲透膜的的膜孔非常的小大概在0.0001微米左右，由於膜孔的大小可以過濾掉水中大部分雜質，比如說病毒、細菌、重金屬等等，有一些雜質會隨著廢水排出機體，但是有一些是會留在反滲透膜上無法排出的，這樣隨著使用的時間慢慢堆積形成沉澱，這時會使反滲透膜產水量降低或質量達不到預想的標准等，時間久了反滲透膜表面就會被雜質覆蓋，通過清洗還是不能恢復過濾效果的，過濾效果依然很差，而且產水所需的壓力也會升高，這樣會增加耗電，導致成本升高。
怎麼判斷反滲透膜需要更換？
1.經過對反滲透膜進行清洗後還是達不到原來的產水需求。這時候要更換反滲透膜。
2.有的經過對反滲透膜的清洗維護，產水水質依然達不到要求，所以需要換膜，比如純凈水在生產過程中要求水質的電導率低於10us/cm，如果出現產水的水質電導率接近10，而且經過維護來還是無法降低，就要換膜了。
3.比如反滲透產水電導率偏高，引起混床再生頻繁，雖然能夠滿足生產，但是操作變得頻繁，所以需要換膜。
4.膜出現望遠鏡效應而破裂，被氧化後性能大幅度衰減等，所以需要換膜。
5.最直觀的方法就是看出水量就可以了，要是出水量突然變得小了很多，用水壓表測試廢水的出水壓力，要是壓力值在6KG以上了就要更換了。
